Louisiana REALTORS® • May 17, 2024

The influence in the real estate industry goes well beyond just sales and purchases. REALTORS® have a special chance to make an impact on their communities by encouraging development, assisting small companies, and raising the standard of living for locals as a whole.

Volunteer Work

REALTORS® can make a significant contribution to their communities by volunteering. Real estate professionals can volunteer their time and skills to causes they are passionate about, whether it's by helping with community clean-ups, providing meals at a nearby shelter, or mentoring young people.

Community Events

When it comes to planning and funding community events that unite people, REALTORS® can be a key player. These activities, which range from organizing neighborhood block parties and charity fundraisers to supporting farmers' markets and cultural festivals, foster a sense of community and develop links within it.

Supporting Local Businesses

Local companies can be supported by REALTORS® through client and colleague promotion. Real estate agents can encourage customers to visit nearby stores, eateries, and service providers by emphasizing the distinctive products and services offered by small companies in the neighborhood. This promotes economic growth and vibrancy.

Advocacy and Education

REALTORS® can use their platform to promote causes close to home, such as affordable housing, environmental preservation, and education. REALTORS® can advocate for positive change and educate their clients by remaining up to date on local policies and activities.

Philanthropy and Charitable Giving

REALTORS® can assist nonprofits and philanthropic groups that tackle pressing issues in their areas. Real estate professionals may have a significant impact on issues they care about through fundraising, sponsorships, and financial contributions.

Community Development Projects

REALTORS® can work with developers, community organizations, and local government agencies to assist infrastructure and build environment improvement projects. This could include projects for urban redevelopment, parks, and recreational areas, as well as construction of cheap housing.

Environmental Stewardship

In their communities, REALTORS® can promote energy-efficient projects, conservation efforts, green building methods, and other environmentally friendly actions. Real estate agents can contribute to the development of communities that are healthier and more resilient by encouraging eco-friendly activities.

There are numerous ways for REALTORS® to positively influence their communities. Real estate professionals may have a significant impact on creating flourishing and vibrant communities through volunteer work, community activities, supporting small businesses, advocacy and education, philanthropy, community development initiatives, and environmental stewardship. Through embracing their stewardship of the community, REALTORS® have the power to bring about long-lasting change and leave a positive legacy for future generations.

Louisiana’s 2026 Regular Session opened this week with several developments that matter directly to REALTORS ®, property managers and housing providers, alongside some broader political shifts worth watching. HB 292: Security Deposit Return Timelines Rep. Delisha Boyd’s HB 292, which addresses procedures for returning residential security deposits, was deferred to next week. This provides additional time for stakeholders to engage with members on practical impacts for lease administration, move out inspections and documentation standards. We’ll continue working to ensure any changes to deposit law are clear, workable and do not expose housing providers to unreasonable liability. Land Use and Development: St. James Parish Decision The Louisiana Supreme Court’s recent St. James Parish decision significantly tightens the standards for overturning local land use decisions, reinforcing that zoning and permitting authority rests with parish and municipal governments as long as their decisions are not arbitrary or capricious. For real estate and development, that means more predictability if projects are aligned with adopted plans and ordinances, but also higher stakes in local elections, planning processes and parish-level negotiations. Governor’s State of the State In his State of the State address, Governor Jeff Landry reiterated his push to phase out the state income tax, expand the LA GATOR and MJ Foster scholarship and workforce programs, and replace vehicle inspection stickers with a QR code system. These programs frame a debate around long-term competitiveness, workforce readiness and household cost of living which are all key drivers of housing demand and migration patterns. Business & Market Trends The business community is focusing the session on insurance, workforce and energy. Commercial and property insurance costs remain a top concern for employers and property owners, and we are monitoring civil justice and insurance reform proposals that could affect market stability and availability. At the same time, Louisiana is seeing more than $100 billion in announced industrial and data center projects, which could reshape local markets, labor conditions and housing needs in multiple regions of the state.
