Real Estate Legislation Advocacy: How REALTORS® Can Make a Difference

Louisiana REALTORS® • Mar 27, 2024

A significant factor in the real estate sector is legislative advocacy, which makes sure that rules and legislation serve the needs of brokers and their customers. REALTORS® advocate for the rights of their clients and the real estate market, in addition to being agents who help with property transactions. Here are some benefits and opportunities that REALTORS® can provide through legislative advocacy.

Protecting Property Rights

REALTORS® can promote laws that protect homeowners' and investors' property rights by engaging in legislative lobbying. REALTORS® can impact legislation to stop the misuse of eminent domain, zoning restrictions, and other policies that might violate property rights by participating in lobbying campaigns.

Promoting Housing Affordability

Legislation encouraging ethical lending practices or incentivizing developers to build affordable housing units are examples of measures that REALTORS® can support. Legislative lobbying makes housing more accessible to more people and families by removing obstacles to owning a home.

Advocating for Fair Housing Practices

REALTORS® can support just housing laws and fight housing discrimination through legislative advocacy. REALTORS® can back laws that guarantee everyone, regardless of color, ethnicity, religion, gender, disability, or other protected traits, equal access to housing options.

Influencing Tax Policies

REALTORS® can support tax laws that help investors and homeowners alike, such as capital gains tax reforms for real estate transactions, programs to relieve property taxes, or tax incentives for homeownership. REALTORS® can assist in easing homeowners' financial burdens and boosting the real estate market by supporting advantageous tax laws.

Supporting Economic Growth

A REALTOR'S® legislative advocacy can support legislation that encourages real estate development, expedites regulatory procedures, and draws local investments, which can promote economic growth. REALTORS® can contribute to the expansion of the economy, the creation of jobs, and a rise in property values by supporting pro-growth legislation.

REALTORS® must engage in legislative lobbying to defend property rights, advance affordable housing, push for fair housing practices, impact tax laws, and encourage economic expansion. By actively participating in advocacy campaigns, REALTORS® can influence legislation to better serve the needs of their clients and the real estate industry as a whole.
