NFIP Extended to December 20th, 2019

Louisiana REALTORS • November 26, 2019

President Donald Trump signed legislation on Thursday, November 21st, 2019, that would extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) until December 20th, 2019. The bill was approved by the Senate earlier that day and by Congress two days earlier.  This marks the 14th short-term extension since 2017.

Congress must now reauthorize the NFIP no later than 11:59 pm on December 20, 2019. If the NFIP authorization were to lapse, FEMA would stop selling and renewing policies for millions of properties across the U.S.

Between now and December 20th, Congress will work on several bills meant to reform the NFIP and reauthorize the program through September 2024. With the NFIP now attached to the Continuing Resolution, there is far less of a chance of it lapsing on December 20th.
