During the 2025 Louisiana Regular Legislative Session, Rep. Shane Mack (R – Livingston) introduced HB 300 which proposed a Constitutional Amendment to increase the income threshold for the purposes of qualifying for the special assessment level. Currently, the income threshold for the purposes of qualifying for the special assessment level is $100,000.

Louisiana last raised this threshold by a vote in 2020, applying to individuals who are permanently disabled or 65 years or older.

The 2025 passed bill, now Act 220, results in a Constitutional Amendment Louisianians will see on the statewide ballot on November 3, 2026. The ballot will read, “Do you support an amendment to increase the maximum amount of income a persona may receive and still qualify for the special assessment level for residential property receiving the homestead exemption?”

If the Constitutional Amendment is successful on the statewide ballot it will be effective January 1, 2027.
