Louisiana REALTORS® Welcomes President Trump’s Action to Reduce Homeownership Costs

Association emphasizes lower monthly expenses, more housing options and practical relief for Louisiana families.

Louisiana REALTORS® welcomes President Donald Trump’s October 22 executive order directing federal agencies to pursue lower mortgage-related costs and encourage more efficient home construction. The association views the action as an opportunity to address financial barriers facing homebuyers and homeowners across Louisiana.

“For Louisiana families, housing affordability comes down to what it costs to buy a home and what it takes to keep it,” said Luke Bullock, Director of Governmental Affairs for Louisiana REALTORS®. “We welcome President Trump’s focus on reducing unnecessary costs and expanding housing opportunities. Every dollar saved on avoidable expenses gives families more room in their budgets and brings homeownership within reach for more people.”

The executive order outlines several initiatives:

  • Mortgage insurance relief: Subject to FHFA determinations, establish a pilot for eligible new Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgages to proactively cancel mortgage insurance when borrowers meet equity and other requirements.
  • Lower refinancing costs: Expand alternatives to lenders' title insurance for eligible refinances, subject to legal and financial safeguards, with savings passed to borrowers.
  • More efficient construction: Establish a federal taskforce to recommend ways to reduce duplicative requirements and advance manufactured and other factory-built housing.
  • Direct loan assistance: Direct USDA and VA to reduce rates on single-family loans made directly by those departments, within legal and funding limits.

Louisiana REALTORS® emphasized that implementation and eligibility rules will determine who benefits. The order does not immediately reduce every homeowner’s payment or eliminate mortgage insurance on existing loans.

“Federal action is an important part of the solution, and Louisiana must continue doing its part,” Bullock said. “That means tackling insurance costs, removing unnecessary permitting delays, protecting private property rights and making it financially practical to build more homes. Our goal is straightforward: help more Louisiana families buy a home, keep their home and build a future here.”

Louisiana REALTORS® will review federal implementation guidance and work with the National Association of REALTORS®, Louisiana’s congressional delegation and state leaders to advance practical housing solutions. The association will provide updates as program details become available.
