Graduate REALTOR® Insitute (GRI)
The Graduate, REALTOR® Institute designation is the foundation coursework for other designations, licenses and certifications. The program is designed primarily for members whose main business activity is residential real estate, and helps those members increase their knowledge and skills in a wide range of technical subjects and real estate fundamentals.
According to a 2013 NAR Member Profile:
- REALTORS® with the GRI Designation earn on average $27,600 more than REALTORS® with no designations
- Earning the GRI will help increase your marketability while giving you a professional advantage
- GRI Designees are able to serve and protect clients with their understanding of technology, laws and procedures
In Louisiana the hours of instruction are broken down into a specific set of courses required to complete the GRI designation. To obtain a GRI designation, students are required to earn a total of 12 GRI credits. This is a total of 96 hours of instruction covering subjects including:
- Business Development
- Sales & Marketing
- Customer & Client Services
- Cultural Diversity
- Risk Management
- Contract Law
- And Professional Standards
While earning the GRI designation, students can also earn other nationally recognized designations, certifications and fulfill some of the LREC continuing education requirements. Students working to earn the GRI have up to five years to fulfill the necessary requirements.

Online GRI Platform
Louisiana REALTORS® offers four online modules that will make it possible to earn four GRI credits totaling 32 hours of instruction. These modules can be purchased individually or as a package. Upon completion you will earn 1 GRI credit per module for a total of four GRI credits. Earn up to 17 CE credits. Below are descriptions for subject topics covered in each module.

In addition to the four mandatory GRI modules, you will need to take the Accredited Buyer Representative, the Seller Representative Specialist and At Home With Diversity. Additionally, students must select also take one finance, technology and REBAC elective to complete the GRI. Many of these electives not only count for GRI credit, but will also count as a needed elective for ABR or SRS. All course and elective descriptions are listed below.

The Accredited Buyer Representative educates and prepares buyer’s reps to provide superior service to buyers and offers methods for building a buyer representation business. In each course module, students examine a different topic that creates a comprehensive guide to help become an effective, efficient and profitable buyer’s representative. To earn the ABR Designation, you must also take one REBAC elective**. The online course offered by REALTOR® University earns 1 GRI credit.
8 hours of CE, 2 days in classroom earns 2 GRI credits, credit towards the ABR designation
The Seller Representative Specialist course focuses on providing students with tools necessary to cover the ins and outs of working with seller clients. It will address the challenges seller agents face on a day to day basis, covering the basics of agency responsibilities and teaching cutting edge approaches to enhance how the selling public is represented. The online course offered by REALTOR® University earns 1 GRI credit.
8 hours of CE, 2 days in classroom earns 2 GRI credits, credit towards the SRS designation
At Home with Diversity teaches real estate professionals how they can increase their sensitivity and adaptability to future market trends. It addresses issues of diversity, fair housing and cultural differences. Participants will learn practical skills and tools to expand business and effectively service all cultural groups. This course will be accepted taken live in classroom or online through REALTOR® University.
7 hours of CE, 1 day, earns 1 GRI credit, credit toward the AHWD Certification

Short Sales & Foreclosures
For many real estate professionals, short sales and foreclosures represent the new “traditional” real estate transaction. This course helps students evaluate all available options for distressed homeowners and identify the components of an effective short-sale package. This course looks at how real estate professionals can counsel buyer-clients in the purchase of foreclosure properties. As a practical resource, this course shows students how consumers can avoid foreclosure in the future.
1 day, earns 1 GRI credit, 1 REBAC elective credit toward ABR, earns SFR certification credit, 8 hours of CE
Know Your Numbers & Win Sales
This course will leave students with a deeper understanding of how current market statistics affect their business and how the Federal Reserve and Federal Housing Finance Agency are actively involved. This course also teaches ways to explain to customers the difference between a Primary and Secondary market and gain a better understanding of interest rates and the economy.
1 day, earns 1 GRI credit, 8 hours of CE
Pricing Strategies: Mastering the CMA
This course is specifically designed to help residential real estate agents and brokers enhance their skills in pricing properties. Learn how to create CMAs, work with appraisers and guide your clients through the anxieties and misperceptions they often have regarding home values. Take this course online at REALTOR® University.
6 hours of CE, 1 GRI credit, and credit toward the ABR elective
The Power Negotiators Playbook
This one-day course uses interactive experience to help negotiators elevate their game! You will examine various negotiation formats and methods so you can play the game to win. A full spectrum of tips, tools, techniques and advantages will be provided allowing you to provide effective negotiating results for clients. The Power Negotiator’s Playbook is. Learn how to be prepared and open to options. Know how to effectively work with tradeoffs, compromise without giving essential components away and reach resolutions that are acceptable to your client.
8 hours of CE, 1 GRI credit, 2 CRB credits, credit toward the ABR elective, credit toward the SRS elective, and credit toward the NEW Real Estate Negotiation Expert (RENE) certification.

Real Estate Marketing Reboot
The marketing reboot course will increase awareness of how significantly the home buying process has changed in the past decade, and how to improve real estate marketing strategy to evolve with it. Students will learn how to develop innovative and effective ways to market their services to any homebuyer. The course explores the buyer counseling session in great detail, while looking at marketing opportunities and points of differentiation.

NAR’s Green Designation Core Course
NAR’s Green Designation Core Course provides advanced training in green building and sustainable business practices so you can seek out, understand and market properties with green features. As a practical resource, this course shows real estate professionals how to explain to consumers what makes a home, building or property green, how to list and market green properties while fulfilling one’s legal and professional obligations and how to implement green practices on the road and in the office.

Military Relocation Professional
When military staff and their families relocate, the services of a real estate professional who understands their needs and timetables makes the transfer easier, faster, and less stressful. This certification focuses on educating real estate professionals about working with current and former military service members to find the housing solutions that best suit their needs and take full advantage of military benefits and support.
Students will learn how to provide the real estate services—at any stage in the service member’s military career—that meet the needs of this niche market and win future referrals. Hone in your knowledge and skills for working with active duty military buyers and sellers, as well as veterans with the NAR’s Military Relocation Professional Certification. Senior Real Estate Specialist
The SRES is a designation for REALTORS® to address the needs of homebuyers age 55 and older. With so many options on the horizon, SRES® is where the future takes shape. This course will help develop the business building skills and resources needed for specialization in the 50+ real estate market.
8 hours of CE, 2 days, earns 1 GRI credit, counts as 1 REBAC elective credit toward ABR
At any given time, today’s real estate professionals may be working with four generations of real estate buyers: Millennials, Generation X, the Baby Boomers and Matures. This one-day course examines the home buying characteristics of these generations and evaluates their expectations, of agents and of the transaction, as well as communication preferences.
